THIRTY

From her room, Misty overheard him greeting the girl in the next room and smirked at his phony sounding enthusiasm. Maybe these other cows hadn’t figured out what was going on, but she had. She had to concoct a scheme to get out, but what? She still had no plan. She was having trouble getting a horse to ride. For some reason, they suddenly didn’t have enough to go around. Although when she hiked down to the stables, there were plenty of them in the corral. And all too often, she found herself locked in her room for hours on end. Protesting and throwing tantrums didn’t do any good. Face it. Martin was in control.

A week after delivery, Misty was hiking with Lisa when she decided to bring up the subject of getting away.

“Lisa, I remember you told me once that you had no desire to leave here. Do you still feel that way?” Misty had noticed the past few months that Lisa wasn’t as energetic as she had been when Misty first arrived. And she appeared to have more and more difficulty taking off the extra pounds and getting back into shape after each successive gestation.

“Why would you ask a thing like that?” Lisa stopped walking and sat down on a rock, wiping her face with the cold towel slung around her neck.

“You just seem different for some reason. You’re more pensive and you’ve put on some extra weight. Your heart doesn’t seem to be in your work anymore. I’m worried about you.”

“What are you…a shrink?” Lisa retorted defensively.

“Misty shrugged. “No, but…well maybe I’m just looking for… I don’t know how to say it.”

“Say what?” Lisa demanded.

“I want to get out of here. I don’t care about any dumb contract. It’s not legal anyway. This whole operation is breaking the law. How can I get out of this?” Misty could feel tears coming to her eyes and she turned away.

“I’m sorry you are not happy, Misty. But what can I do? I can’t help you escape and I don’t want to leave, not now. I’ve nowhere to go.”

“What do you mean, not now?” Misty picked up a note of sadness and foreboding in Lisa’s voice.

“Look Misty, can you keep your mouth shut? We’re friends aren’t we?” Lisa looked Misty in the eye. “Anything I tell you is strictly confidential. You can’t talk about it.”

Lisa’s normally glowing countenance turned solemn and the dark circles under her eyes seemed to deepen. “You can’t repeat this to anyone.”

“That goes both ways. Don’t you breathe a word to anyone that I’m planning to escape,” Misty replied solemnly. They moved closer together and lowered their voices.

Lisa spoke haltingly as tears welled up in her eyes. “I’ve been in love with Martin for years, but it’s only been recently that it’s starting to get to me. It’s always been strictly business between us since he made me his assistant, and I’ve kept my feelings under control until now. But, but…” she broke into tears. “I’ve got a large lump here.
